It is easy to see why Pateros is the only town in Manila that has not been elevated as a city. Not only is this municipality the smallest in Manila in terms of population and area. It is mainly made up of slums and grimy small villages, making it the second densest area in Manila.
Home of the balut
While Pateros do not have accommodations or shopping, dining and entertainment havens that might appeal to tourists, it is popular for its duck-raising industry, especially, for being the country’s biggest producer of the exotic Filipino street delicacy, balut, the boiled egg of a premature duck fetus. In fact, Pateros in Tagalog literally means “duck raisers.” Hence, the only reason travelers come here is to know how the infamous balut is done, or for the more adventurous, how it is eaten.
